Children, Youth & Families Minister

Summary

All Souls’ Episcopal Church in Point Loma is a welcoming community that embraces all individuals and families wherever they are in their journeys. All Souls’ is seeking a part-time Children, Youth and Families Minister (CYF) to lead our preschool-5 th grade Small Souls Sunday program and our 6 th -12 th grade Youth Group. The goal of this ministry is to engage, inspire and enable the children of All Souls’ to lead a life in Christ and welcome children into the wider life and ministry of the parish. The CYF reports to the Rector as part of a collaborative and creative staff and parish that highly values the full inclusion of children in its worship and common life.

A disciple of Jesus Christ with an understanding of his or her unique gifts

  • A kind and compassionate nature, energy, sense of humor, and most importantly, someone who loves kids and cares deeply about their formation

  • Passionate about working with children to see them grow in their faith

    • A desire to encourage our children towards music, in conjunction with our music director.

    • A good understanding of child development and skill levels (ages 3-18).

    • Good interpersonal skills and desire to include people of all ages in ministry.

    • Comfort with the ability to communicate using various technologies and social media.

    • Excellent organizational skills that allow for proper planning for events and prioritizing of actions. 

    • Ability to plan ahead and be flexible at the same time.

    • Commitment to continued quality improvement in collaboration with a parish team of parents, grandparents and allies.

    • Willingness to work collaboratively with staff and lay leaders.

    • Communicate effectively with parents and staff and maintain relationships to ensure smooth-running programs.

    • Consistency, reliability and responsibilities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Small Souls (preschool – 5 th grade) Be present during and after worship on Sunday mornings at the 10:15 service.

    • Develop and implement a program for preschool through 5 th graders for “Small Souls” during the sermon at the Sunday 10:15am service, which includes (but isn’t limited to) teaching the practice and meaning of some elements of Episcopal worship (Confession, Lord’s Prayer, Post-communion Prayer, etc).

    • Welcome newcomers and visitors with children and invite them to participate in children’s ministries.

    • Maintain the cleanliness and supply stock of the Prayground, a child-friendly space at  the front of the Nave where children and families worship alongside the rest of the congregation.

    • Plan and implement/collaborate with other churches to run an annual Vacation Bible School.

  • Youth Group (6 th grade – 12 th grade)

    • Provide safe space for youth to gather and develop fellowship.

    • Design and lead youth group gatherings at least once a month, typically after the Sunday 10:15am service, with a focus on fun and engaging activities.

    • Manage religious education offering for youth, including choosing curriculum, maintaining communication with lay leaders, and communicating offerings to the parish.

    • Coordinate youth service opportunities, advertise and support Diocesan youth events.

    • Prepare pre-teens and teens for confirmation training that will be led by the Diocese.

    • Help our pre-teens and teens become mentors and shepherds of the younger children, under the guidance of the parents.

  • Administrative

    • Manage administrative tasks related to Family Ministry; such as budgeting, record-keeping, and event planning

    • Report directly to and communicate with Rector regularly.

    • Maintain regular communication with families and parish about youth events (e-blasts, newsletters, social media, signage at church and Sunday announcements).

    • Assist Parish Administrator to keep up-to-date records of households with children.

    • Ensure that all programs and activities comply with the diocese’s Safe Church Safe Communities policies and procedures.

  • Other Duties

    • Help recruit and develop volunteers for youth and family ministry.

    • Schedule programs and activities to support the children’s ministries during special occasions and seasons (about 6 times a year), such as Advent wreath making, Christmas Eve pageant, Shrove Tuesday, Christmas Marketplace, Easter egg hunt, etc.

    • Develop and oversee seasonal activities and special events (for example, Christmas parties or Easter egg hunts) for children

    • Establish long term plans and calendars for our ministry to children.

    • Maintain relationships with families in the parish, communicating pastoral concerns to clergy as needed.

    • Participating in conversations about the role of children in church, as need arises.

    • Coordinate and lead periodic mission trips.

    • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with preference for a focus in theology or education, but we are open to candidates with a variety of life experiences.

  • Hours are flexible, but attendance at the Sunday 10:15am church service and youth group meetings is required.

  • Experience or training in children/youth ministry is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of the Episcopal Church’s theology, worship, and traditions strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, lay leaders, and volunteers.

  • Experience working with toddlers (2-5) and youth/teens (6-18).

  • Passes the background check, and Safe Church, Safe Communities training.

  • Compensation & Benefits Part-time hourly position: 8-10 hours per week (8 to start, with the opportunity (indeed, the invitation). to grow and expand this ministry, over time) Note: Some additional hours are occasionally required for things like Vacation Bibl School, overnight retreats, mission trips and outings, etc.

  • $22-$26 per hour, depending on experience.

  • Regular schedule is Sunday mornings and early afternoon, with the other hours as negotiated with the Rector.

  • The hours of work are expected to cover preparation time and Sunday activities.

  •  $500 annual professional development / continuing education20 hours paid vacation per year, as accrued.

  • 10 hours paid continuing education time, as accrued.

Parish Operations Manager

Summary

All Souls’ Episcopal Church is a vibrant, active multi-generational parish in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego, with about 150 active members. We say to everyone who visits, “Welcome Home. Peace Awaits.” We also serve the wider community through our ministry programs and by providing meeting, concert and event space to outside organizations. All Souls’ is seeking an experienced and highly organized Operations Manager to help ensure the smooth and effective day-to-day operations of our church. The ideal candidate will have a passion for serving the church community, supporting church leadership, and facilitating ministry activities.


Job Description

Our Parish Operations Manager leads and organizes all aspects of All Souls’ day-to-day operations outside of worship and pastoral care, with a particular focus on parish communications and third-party use of our space. This work includes, but isn't limited to, general administrative support to the rector, staff and volunteers; data and records management; phone and email support; robust parish communications; developing an effective management system for groups (both internal and
external) who use our spaces; liaising with our outside accountant and bookkeeper; supporting parish ministries and committees; and coordinating and collaborating with volunteers. The Parish Manager is a resource person for both members and non-members, and provides a welcoming, responsive presence in the All Souls' office. An aspect of this job is discerning the pastoral needs of others and relaying them, confidentially and discretely, to the pastoral staff.

 

Duties​

  • Pastoral Support: 

    • Initiating and coordinating preparations for various annual fellowship and
      outreach events

    • Preparing and publishing weekly and periodic feast-day worship bulletins

    • Assisting the rector with calendar, newcomer and administrative support

    • Assisting other staff members, as needed

    • Scheduling regular pastoral care visits

    • Supporting commissions, committees and guilds from time to time

    • Liaising with families on logistics for baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc

  • Parish Administration:

    • ​Being a welcoming 'face of All Souls'' in the office on weekdays

    • Reviewing, with the rector, upcoming parish activities and priorities, and
      planning to facilitate them

    • Lead administrator of Breeze, the parish's church management software
      solution, that serves as our member database, communications, event and
      facilities calendars, volunteer coordination, etc

    • Designing and implementing roll-out of Breeze to the wider parish, via
      both internet and app

    • Printing and maintaining name tags for parishioners,staff and newcomers
      Attending weekly staff meetings and 1:1 meetings with the rector

  • Property Administration:

    • ​Serving as point of contact and primary administrator for facility by All
      Souls’ members, tenants or community groups and overseeing rentals,
      reservations, contracts and payments

    • Screening interested users and showing facilities as needed

    • Maintaining facilities calendar
      Securing staff or volunteer support for the event and coordinating
      building access for events

    • Administering policies and procedures parish properties and facility use

    • Developing, over time, and implementing a plan to increase third-party
      use of our space, so that we more fully thoughtfully serve the community’s
      needs

    • Managing Columbarium operations

  • Communications:

    • Developing and implementing a regular, effective communications
      program for parish ministries and activities

    • Maintaining and updating the parish website (uses Wix platform)

    • Using Canva (or a similar tool) to create attractive, professional parish
      communications

    • Creating and maintaining an attractive, effective social media presence for
      the parish (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, NextDoor)

    • Producing weekly digital parish newsletters

    • Maintaining parish Constant Contact account

    • Maintaining exterior signage

    • Leveraging Breeze a parish communications tool (both email and app)​​

  • Finance:

    • ​Managing Accounts receivable: receiving, processing, acknowledging,
      recording payments due (rents, property donations, cell leases, etc)

    • Processing weekly donations: receiving, counting, recording, depositing
      weekly offering receipts, in collaboration with volunteer counters

 

This position reports to the Rector; compensation is $60,000 - 65,000 per year, commensurate with
experience; two weeks annual vacation and paid holidays; health insurance and retirement savings
plan.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or GED) required; college credit or degree a plus

  • 3 -5 years relevant experience (some in non-profit, preferred), with good references

  • Strong writing skills, proactive communications and sensitive interpersonal skills

  • A passion for All Souls’ ministry and community mission

  • Highly proficient in Word and Excel and experienced in PowerPoint

  • Comfortable with learning and using CRM, bookkeeping, communications, social media and
    graphics (Canva) platforms

  • Knowledge of general financial accounting including financial controls

  • Excellent manager … highly motivated, with good ability to self-manage priorities and
    competing needs … team-oriented … supportive of both the community and mission of a
    Christian church

  • Adeptness in working in an environment primarily composed of volunteers.​​​

 

Requirements

  • 40 hours per week (non-exempt, full-time), Monday - Friday; working hours to be
    determined in collaboration with the Rector

  • Must be familiar with and comfortable around Christian worship and practices; a strong
    preference for prior experience with Episcopal or Roman Catholic liturgies

  • Hiring will be subject to passing diocesan background checks and completing the required
    Safe Church Safe Communities training
